When does fertility start to decline? Millennials don’t know the answer

Baby feet

Many millennials want to be parents someday, but many don’t know at which point their fertility will decline. In a survey of 1,215 students from the University of Melbourne, less than half could point out when fertility in women will decline significantly, while fewer than one in five knew when a man’s fertility starts to drop.

While most participants said they want to be parents eventually, they will think about it only after ticking off their checklist of having a good career, financial stability, and a successful marriage.

Dr Eugenie Prior, one of the lead researchers of the study, said the findings show that youngsters in their 20s and 30s may be harbouring unrealistic expectations of fertility and parenthood without realising that their ambitions are up against their biological clock. More have to be done to raise their awareness about fertility, Dr Prior added, even with the advanced treatments available today.
